Who is Nancy?
I am a former 1st grade teacher and then full time mom for my 3 children. When my family moved to Michigan in 2012 and my youngest was in 3rd grade, I began exploring what my next chapter could be. Lots of research and many, many conversations with all kinds of interesting people led me to senior care and advocacy.
It turns out that what fills me up the most is taking care of people.
How did I begin focusing on senior care? When I was a teenager, 3 of my grandparents came to live with my family in the final months of their lives. Being with them in their final days was a precious gift for all of us. Then, as a young mother with preschool kids, I had the privilege of going to my parents home (with the kids in tow) and helping to care for my father for the last 3 weeks of his life. I am so grateful I was able to be involved in his care and that we had that time together. Afterwards, as my mom lived on her own and eventually moved into a retirement community, I loved visiting and helping her and her friends with simple tasks and errands. I started to pay attention to that feeling of joy and began contacting people I knew in Ann Arbor to talk about ways that I could begin helping older adults in the area.
In early 2017, I enrolled at Washtenaw Community College to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. I needed the foundational knowledge of what it means to do hands on care. I then began working for a local home health care company in Ann Arbor. I met the owner earlier during the time that I was exploring what I could do. She offered for me to come onboard and learn the business first hand.
By the end of 2018, I was helping to run the business by managing the caregivers, doing the scheduling, checking in regularly with each client and communicating with their family members (often adult children). I also continued seeing a few of my own clients because I loved the relationships we created. Life was full and I loved what I was doing.
Then Covid hit in 2020. The owner was ready to retire and I was ready to go out on my own. Delightful Care, LLC was launched and I assumed I would just hire new caregivers and keep on going. But the caregiving industry completely changed during Covid. It was hard to find quality people who wanted to do hands-on care. I had to step back and decide what to do. Since the connections with the clients was the most important thing to me, I moved forward with that in mind. For now, I am not hiring caregivers and instead I try to make myself available for people who are focused on staying independent for as long as possible. I tell my clients that I’m trying to work myself out of a job. I want to be available for them for the time they need me, but ideally I want them to get to a point where they can do things on their own again.
A few examples:
I essentially work with you to determine what you need and we go from there. So, Delightful Care, LLC is just Nancy, coming in to help you however you need me, for as little or as long as that is. I am bonded and insured, and fully vaccinated.
